GeeXella is a Rainbow

Music that moves.

A bleeding heart, rainbow-fueled, passionate nightingale has taken a form that is GeeXella (they/them). Describe yourself in 3 words:

Anxious, Black, Tired.

Can you tell us a little bit about your playlist?

I tried to pull from things I listen to all the time and some good throw backs. I also featured some amazing artists in my city :) I feel like my city has been blooming some beautiful talent. Music needs to move me. I love a good turn up but also I love to be a said boi at 3am.

What should we do while listening to it?

This is definitely a playlist that will help your mental health. Some Solange in there, also Ivy Sole. I think those two alone will calm you.

What’s been the hardest thing about pursuing a music career?

I think the hardest thing to me is the touch and go of it all. I really love to have conversations with me. I love getting to know the ins and outs of folx and that’s hard for me to deal with.

Music needs to move me.

Why do you do it?

I do what I do because I know how important representation is. I’m black, I’m Mexican, and I’m queer. One summer I worked out in Santa Barbara and I met a little who who was also Afro Latina and she never met an adult that looked like her. That made my heart warm, because when I was her age, I never saw someone that looked like me either. I want to inspire youth and let them know they are not alone in their feelings and experiences.

What advice do you have for other artists?

I tell them to be smart and know your worth. Get paid for your labor. Know your worth then ADD TAX! The best advice one of my friends gave me. I also let them know to stay true to yourself and what you believe in.

What’s your favorite thing about yourself today?

Today my favorite thing is my hustle. I’ve been working hard not only for my community but for myself. I’ve been reflecting and I’ve accomplished A LOT! I’m creating intentional spaces for queer people in my city! Haha That should be celebrated. I deserve to be celebrated.

I want to inspire youth & let them know they are not alone.

Who’s one artist on your playlist we need to start following immediately, and why?

Matilda. She has such a powerful voice. She is so small and when I saw her live in my city I was BLOWN AWAY! Her voice is very warm and she is so funny. Het lyrics and style are very refreshing as well.
