Gully Boys Unite

Bye, imposter syndrome.

By Ohrkid

Gully Boys (she/they) are a femme indie trio from Minneapolis, MN. Drawing inspiration from a multitude of musical backgrounds Gully Boys recorded their first LP & won City Pages’s Picked to Click 2018!

Gully Boys! How did the three of you decide to jump in head-first and make a band?

We literally played one cover together, “Boyfriend” by Best Coast, and it felt so good we decided right then and there that we were going to be in a band and that we were going to learn our instruments together and make music. We had all had aspirations as teens to be in a band but never had the commitment or confidence to pursue it in the way we are doing now.

Which musicians have inspired you, made your hair stand on end?

Courtney Love, Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson have been huge inspirations for Kathy. A lot of our songs are birthed while listening to one of those artists!

What’s the most badass thing a person can be?

Honest and vulnerable.

What aspect of your musical practice are you proudest of?

I think one of the most rewarding things we have done so far is win City Pages’s “Picked to Click”, which promoted Gully Boys as Minnesota's Best New Band. We had been working really hard the years prior and we had just released our first album, so to be recognized for that work brought us to tears. We had no idea we were even nominated or that people had seen the work that we were doing. We always play for the insurmountable joy it brings us, and to know that that joy is felt by the people in our community gave us the push and the drive to never stop doing what we love.

Do not be afraid to take up space.

Do you have any advice for other womxn artists?

Do not be afraid to take up space. Do not be afraid to ask questions. When men tell you how you “should” do something, laugh. Find community and lean on them when you are down. Don’t be afraid to be LOUD, and it's ok to make mistakes! Womxn artists are expected to be TWICE as good as men and that's bullshit!

What’s been the hardest thing about pursuing a music career?

Not letting imposter syndrome eat us alive. We are so hard on ourselves sometimes we forget.

Who’s one artist on your playlist we need to start following immediately, and why?

GRLwood and Gender Confetti hands down!!!!!!

Comment on mullets, please? How do they make you feel?

The mullets were a great phase for the boys. It was fun to all be rocking different variations of the same style. There is power in the #midwestmullet.
