Politics, production, & soft butch power.
Kitty Crimes (she/her) is most noted for her flagrant performances with explorations into rap & pop expressions. She's opened for Big Freedia, Cupcakke, Mykki Blanco, Esme Patterson, Tennis, Andrew W.K., & has been hosted by Red Bull, Meow Wolf, Red Rocks, & Tree Fort Music Fest. Assuming creative control for all things heard & seen is hallmark to what makes Kitty Crime's sound so unique.
Describe Kitty Crimes in three words:
Nasty: Fuck Yeah:
Can you tell us a little bit about your playlist?
It’s just the best of all worlds of womxn colliding to blow my mind. Not gonna lie, there’s some Lillith Fair moments in there. I also am incredibly influenced by femmes in my own life, and you’ll hear a handful of them towards the middle of the playlist. Also of course, people who rock my world from afar (Princess Nokia, SOPHIE, Kelela). If you can time making out with someone to the second half I’d do that.
Do you get political with your work?
My work is inherently political, so I find relief in the idea that it speaks for itself, since I feel more effective being me and using catharsis as a way to activate. Expressing defiance is how I do that in my work, defiance against a status quo.
I’d also include in this thread the notion that queer femme artists are becoming more accepted recently, but honestly if you can’t pass for straight even just a little, it’s still hard to get the support that you could garner by appealing to men. So it feels political for me to be successful just being my own soft butch self.
How do you approach producing?
Recently I’ve been going to Tierra Mia every day and making a beat per diem on Ableton, which is a new recent victory, feeling prolific. I find samples or melodies that compel me, and do my best to build the right beat around it, and songwrite/arrange afterwards. I used to mix a song for a year to make sure it was perfect. I’m so glad I don’t do that anymore.
Your new album is all about power. What makes you feel powerful?
Being able to reclaim my power in moments I thought it was gone forever makes me feel powerful. Tapping into currents of energy that I never knew existed in me makes me feel powerful. Choosing higher outcomes in my daily life make me feel powerful. Feeling capable.
What’s your favorite thing about yourself today?
I just have been feeling so capable as a mixing engineer and multimedia artist. I didn’t always feel that way. It’s the one place in my life I can see the most progress, and I’m grateful for that. Thanks for asking!
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Who’s one artist on your playlist we need to start following immediately, and why?
Blackwater Holylight FOR SURE. Femme Vintage Doomie Metal. And I don’t even like a lot of that stuff. Sounds like Black Sabbath and they’re all babes.
